I've never been able to make stuff up, so I try to lead an interesting life and write about that. My husband and I adopted two Russian preschoolers five years ago, which helps. I've also volunteered on an Amazonian medical brigade, conducted research in speech perception, and pursued careers in teaching writing and breaking software (not simultaneously). When I used to have spare time, I liked to go camping, volunteer as a farmhand or crisis counselor, learn new languages, take things apart, and make music out of whatever instruments were handy. These days I spend my few spare minutes enjoying the quiet.
